Step-by-Step instructions to make Beef Meatballs in Brown Mushroom Gravy:
While there are many techniques out there for making beef meatballs, it doesn’t need to be complicated. By simply using different types of ingredients you are able create a unique and delicious meal.
To get started, simply combine spice cabinet ingredients like garlic powder, onion powder, and salt into the ground beef and mix well. Then form into 1 inch meatballs and set aside while the pan preheats. (This will allow time for all of the spices to infuse the meat mixture.) Heat a large cast iron pan on medium heat. When fully heated, add one tablespoon of butter. Place meatballs into the pan one by one and cook until they are only a little bit pink inside. When done, move the meatballs over to one side of the pan to allow room for preparing the brown mushroom gravy. We love when we can cook a dish all in the same pan!
What is needed to make the brown mushroom gravy:
Making brown gravy is far easier than you think and it only takes a few ingredients. Don’t fall for the store bought packets in an attempt to make life easier. Store bought seasoning packets contain unhealthy ingredients as well as preservatives that are not needed to make delicious brown gravy.
The base of this mushroom gravy sauce is Coconut Aminos. Coconut Aminos are always great to have on hand to use in many different recipes and are a excellent substitute for soy or Worcestershire sauce. They add rich flavor to any sauce without all the extra ingredients and preservatives found in many packets or condiments.
Bone Broth or Water
Bone broth is also great to have on hand. It can add another depth of flavor to this easy sauce as well as many nutrients. In a pinch, water works great so don’t stress. Use what you have in your kitchen.
Mushrooms
The star of the show in this brown mushroom gravy! Add as many mushrooms to this sauce as you would like. Mushrooms are one of the best ingredients to keep this sauce elevated and delicious because mushrooms pair perfectly with a brown gravy! Don’t have mushrooms on hand? No worries! You could replace the mushrooms with onions or serve the meatballs with only brown gravy.
Butter
A rich healthy fat, butter is so flavorful and is a perfect choice to use when sautéing anything. It adds a richness to the sauce that can’t be beat.
Freshly Milled Flour
I choose to use freshly milled flour as my thickener because I prefer how flour thickens a sauce compared to using cornstarch or arrowroot. But don’t worry if you don’t have freshly milled flour. Simply use the thickener you have on hand; flour or 1-2 Tbsp. of cornstarch or arrowroot will work just fine.
Steps for Making the Brown Mushroom Gravy:
- Step one: Using the same cast iron pan you cooked the meatballs in, turn on burner to medium heat and sauté the mushrooms in the remaining 2 Tbsp. of butter and 1/4 tsp. of salt until cooked.
- Step two: Add the bone broth and coconut amino to the pan and stir to deglaze the pan drippings.
- Step three: Increase heat to medium high-high to bring the mushrooms and the liquid to a simmer. Once simmering, add thickener and whisk. Continue stirring on medium high heat until the sauce has thickened.
- Step four: Serve the Beef Meatballs in Brown Mushroom Gravy with a simple side, over mashed potatoes or rice.
Why cook beef meatballs in a cast iron pan?
In our opinion, cooking in cast iron is the best! Not only is it far less toxic than cooking in a non-stick pan, it also heats better and flavors the meat. Your beef meatballs will turn out tender and delicious when cooked in a cast iron pan.
What can I serve with beef meatballs in brown mushroom gravy sauce?
We love serving these meatballs over mashed potatoes or rice. They go well with almost any side dish we have leftover in our refrigerator. Consider serving it with a salad and our favorite easy vinaigrette, maybe some creamy mac and cheese, fresh milled roll or a slice of buttered bread.
