An easy, homemade Coleslaw recipe
Another Midwest favorite side dish, this recipe is loaded with a creamy dressing and packed with flavor that will keep you coming back for more. Last year, our friend Carol shared this wonderful recipe with us that she has been making for her family for years. So in our home we call this Carol’s Famous Coleslaw. We tweaked this recipe to suit our family clean ingredient food needs by using Primal Kitchen Avocado Mayo and Maple Sugar instead of Cane Sugar and it turned out the same. It is nice to have a recipe that is still delicious after making substitutions.
Key features in Our easy extra creamy coleslaw:
- Slightly sweet and oh so creamy, the dressing in this coleslaw recipe is to-die-for. A delicious old fashioned recipe that will literally make you want to lick the bowl and not waste one drop!
- Versatile because you can easily decide if you want to add to this recipe or make it just as we have listed. Really any combination would work. I personally love to shake things up a bit by using different vegetable combinations. Adding some red cabbage, diced apple, diced onion or diced celery would work wonderfully in this recipe. Also, the dressing is delicious on a regular dinner salad as well.
- You will find this recipe super easy to make ahead and set aside to serve along with your lunch or supper.
- An excellent made from scratch recipe to share with others and enjoy during the summer grilling season!
Ingredients in Extra Creamy Coleslaw
- Cabbage- Green, red or a mixture is the main ingredient. Be sure to slice thin or shred uniformly.
- Mayonnaise – Use any brand of mayo that you prefer, miracle whip would also work well. We used Avocado Mayo.
- Heavy Cream- This is the key ingredient for making the coleslaw extra creamy.
- Apple Cider Vinegar– I prefer this over white vinegar due to the flavor but feel free to use either one.
- Sugar– Pure Cane sugar or your sugar of choice, we used maple sugar.
- Celery Salt – Adds celery flavor and depth to the dressing.
- Salt– I used Redmond’s Real Salt but Sea Salt would also work fine.
- Ground Mustard – Adds a slight spice which elevates the flavor of the dressing.
