Step-by-Step instructions for making German Pancakes

It is time to mix all of the ingredients together into one large bowl. This only takes a few minutes to do and you will have an amazing breakfast ready in no time at all.

  • Whisk together the flour, milk, eggs, vanilla and salt then set aside
  • Place 5 tablespoons of butter in a 9×13 baking pan. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Once oven has preheated, place the baking pan in the oven for the butter to melt. Watch closely, you will want the butter melted and bubbly but it will burn quickly if you are not careful. This usually takes around 3-4 minutes.
  • Once the butter is melted and bubbling slightly, remove from the oven.
  • Pour the German Pancake batter immediately into the hot, melted butter. Make sure to pour your pancake batter into the middle of the pan so that the melted butter is surrounding the batter. This ensures that your pancake rises correctly. Do not stir this.

From Scratch kitchen Tips

  • What is another name for German Pancakes? Dutch Babies.
  • What is the difference between German Pancakes and regular Pancakes? German pancakes are eggy and puffy pancakes with a soft center, baked in a 9×13 pan in the oven while regular pancakes have a cake like texture and are made in individual disks in a skillet.
  • What is the difference between German Pancakes and Crepes? German pancakes could be considered a more “homestyle” crepe that is denser and made in a large pan while Crepes are thin and not fluffy and made individually.
  • Can this recipe be doubled? Unfortunately, the answer is no. I have tried several times and they turn out thick and very eggy.
  • How to serve these pancakes? Serve warm with maple syrup & powdered sugar, flavored syrup such as blueberry with fresh berries or cooked apples and top with whipped cream. Add scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage for a mid morning brunch.
  • What is the best way to store these? Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 days or freeze and defrost in the refrigerator overnight.
