Easy Homemade Dog Treats With Fresh Milled Flour

Yield: 12 Jumbo Treats or 24 Regular Treats
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

A nutritious, homemade treat for dogs made with fresh milled flour, peanut butter, and mashed sweet potato & carrots.

Ingredients

  • 450 Grams Fresh Milled Wheat, I used Soft White Wheat*
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil, melted
  • 1/2 Cup Natural Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 Cup Honey
  • 1/2 Cup Sweet Potato, cooked and mashed
  • 1/2 Cup Carrots, cooked and mashed
  • 1 Large Egg

Peanut Butter Frosting

  • 2 Tablespoons Natural Peanut Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Tapioca Starch

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Begin by cooking 1/2 cup of diced sweet potato and 1/2 cup of diced carrots until tender. You can do this in a microwave safe container, in a saucepan, or in the oven. Once cooked, mash sweet potatoes and carrots and set them aside.
  3. Next, mill 450 grams of wheat. For convenience, I like to weigh out my grains before I mill them. (see note) Once grains have been milled, mix 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, and 1/2 tsp. salt into the flour and then set this mixture aside.
  4. In a medium sized mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened coconut oil, 1/2 cup peanut butter, and 1/2 cup honey. Whisk egg and mashed vegetables into the mixture.
  5. After all the wet ingredients have been mixed together, stir in dry ingredients. Dough will be stiff.
  6. Turn dough onto a floured surface and roll out to a little less than 1/2" thick. Cut out using cookie cutter.
  7. Place cut out treats on baking sheet about 2" apart and bake for 15-16 minutes. Treats will be golden with a slightly crisp bottom. Remove treats from baking sheet to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 until all treat dough has been used.
  9. Once cookies are cool, in a small bowl mix together 2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter, 1 Tablespoon of Honey, and 1 Tablespoon of Tapioca Starch. Place frosting in a piping bag. TIP: I like to use a freezer quart size zip lock bag with a small tip cut into it for an easy, DIY piping bag. Decorate treats as desired.
  10. Dog treats store well in an airtight container on the counter for up to 7 days. Treats can also be frozen for future enjoyment and then defrosted before giving them to your dog.

Notes

*Why do you measure your wheat in grams? When milling grains, it is easier to weigh out your grains before milling rather than guessing how much grain will equal how many cups. While this step may seem inconvenient, I've found it to be a lot simpler than milling too much flour or too little. This way I get the perfect amount of flour every time.

*Use only Natural 100% Peanut Butter. It's important when making homemade dog treats to make sure your ingredients are as pure as possible. Most additives could be toxic to dogs. More ingredient tips can be found in this blog post.

The BEST Heathy Dog Treats With Fresh Milled Flour!

You’re making the very best treats for yourself, why not make them for your favorite pup too?! Our girl, Foxy, had a special 2 year old birthday celebration this year with homemade treats. She especially loved licking the peanut butter frosting off of the top!

It was a special celebration not just because Foxy turned two (we think) but also because it was our one year anniversary of having her. Foxy was a stray, homeless and most likely abandoned, wandering a local cemetery before we found her…or more like she found us. After taking her to the vet, who informed us she was most likely a year old, and confirming there were no missing dogs in the area – she became one of the family. She is such a gift and brings so much joy! We consider her sent to us by the Lord and we could write paragraphs about how much we love her. She deserved to be celebrated!

Why you’ll love (and your dog will love) these Homemade Dog Treats:

  • Made with natural and nourishing ingredients- We specifically chose each ingredient to be high in protein, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. We’re always looking for “clean ingredients” in purchased treats, so why not make your own?!
  • Spoil your pet with EASY homemade treats! While we don’t normally take the time to make homemade treats for our pets, these homemade dog biscuits were a fun treat to make for our special day. They’re so easy to mix, roll out, and bake.
  • Freezer friendly! You can easily make a big batch of these and toss them in the freezer to pull out and defrost for your pet. Some dogs may even enjoy them frozen…just be sure your dog has strong teeth!
  • Made with fresh milled flour. Dogs need vitamins and fiber too and that’s why we love using fresh milled flour in these treats. It’s more like a cookie vitamin than a dessert! Ha!
